Key Ingredients for Your Instant Pot Spaghetti Success
Preparing this simple yet incredibly delicious meal begins with a few essential ingredients. Make sure you have these on hand to create a truly satisfying Instant Pot Spaghetti:
-
Spaghetti Noodles: The foundation of our dish! You can use any brand of spaghetti you prefer. Whether you like thin, thick, or traditional spaghetti, it will work wonderfully. For best results in the Instant Pot, we recommend breaking the spaghetti noodles in half to ensure they fit well and cook evenly.
-
Ground Beef: This adds rich flavor and satisfying texture to your sauce. Opt for lean ground beef to reduce excess fat, or choose a slightly higher fat content for a more robust taste. This protein is what transforms our spaghetti into a hearty, fulfilling meal.
-
Jarred Spaghetti Sauce: Select your favorite brand of pre-made spaghetti or marinara sauce. Using a quality jarred sauce saves a tremendous amount of time without sacrificing flavor. Its ready-to-use nature is key to the speed of this Instant Pot recipe. (For those who love making things from scratch, feel free to use your own Homemade Sauce recipe HERE!)
-
Diced or Crushed Tomatoes: A can of diced or crushed tomatoes (or even tomato sauce) adds depth and a fresh, bright tomato flavor to the sauce, balancing the richness of the meat. This extra layer of tomato goodness elevates the overall profile of your Instant Pot Spaghetti.
-
Olive Oil: Essential for browning the ground beef and ensuring a flavorful start to the dish.
-
Seasonings: Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper are crucial for building a classic, aromatic flavor profile. These spices are the backbone of a delicious spaghetti sauce. A touch of sugar helps balance the acidity of the tomatoes, creating a well-rounded taste.
-
Water: The necessary liquid for pressure cooking the pasta and ensuring a perfectly tender result.
-
Parmesan Cheese (for garnish): An optional but highly recommended topping that adds a salty, umami-rich finish to your individual servings.

Expert Tips for Perfect Instant Pot Spaghetti Every Time
Achieving flawless Instant Pot Spaghetti is incredibly straightforward, but a few key tips can elevate your results from good to absolutely amazing. Follow these pointers for a consistently delicious meal:
- Brown Your Meat Thoroughly: Don’t rush this step! Properly browning the ground beef on the “Sauté” setting develops rich, savory flavors that are essential for a robust sauce. Ensure there are no pink areas remaining before moving to the next step.
- Deglaze the Pot: After browning and draining fat, add your water and use a wooden spoon or hard spatula to scrape up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of the Instant Pot. This crucial step prevents the “Burn” notice and infuses more flavor into your sauce.
- Break and Criss-Cross the Spaghetti: Breaking the spaghetti noodles in half helps them fit better in the pot and ensures more even cooking. Arrange them in a criss-cross pattern rather than a single clump. This allows the liquid and sauce to circulate around the noodles effectively.
- The “No Stir” Rule: This is vital! Once you’ve added the water, spaghetti, and then the sauce, DO NOT STIR. The spaghetti and sauce need to be layered. Stirring can cause heavier, thicker ingredients (like sauce) to sink to the bottom, which can trigger the “Burn” notice. The sugar in the sauce can also crystallize and burn if it’s directly at the bottom.
- Ensure Liquid Coverage: Make sure the spaghetti noodles are mostly submerged or covered by the sauce mixture. You want the liquid and sauce to be both above and below the pasta for optimal cooking. Gently press the spaghetti down if needed to ensure good coverage.
- Quick Release for Best Texture: After the pressure cooking cycle is complete, perform a quick release of the pressure. This stops the cooking process promptly, preventing your spaghetti from becoming overcooked or mushy.
- Thicken the Sauce: Once the pressure is released and you’ve stirred everything together, leave the lid off for a few minutes before serving. The sauce will continue to thicken slightly as it cools, achieving that perfect, clingy consistency.
Customizing Your Instant Pot Spaghetti: Variations & Substitutions
One of the best aspects of this Instant Pot Spaghetti recipe is its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with different ingredients to tailor it perfectly to your taste and dietary preferences.
Do I have to use spaghetti noodles for this recipe?
Absolutely not! While spaghetti is traditional, you can easily substitute other types of pasta. Fettuccine, linguine, rotini, or even angel hair pasta can work. However, keep in mind that the cooking time may vary slightly based on the thickness and shape of the pasta you choose. Thinner pasta, like angel hair, will require less cooking time, while thicker pasta may need an extra minute or two. Always check your pasta for al dente perfection!
Can I use something different than ground beef?
Yes, you certainly can! If ground beef isn’t your preference or isn’t available, there are several delicious alternatives. Ground turkey or ground chicken are excellent leaner options that pair beautifully with spaghetti sauce and pasta. For a richer, spicier flavor, consider using Italian sausage (mild or hot, depending on your preference), making sure to remove it from its casings before browning. For a vegetarian twist, you could omit the meat entirely or substitute it with plant-based ground “meat” crumbles or hearty chopped mushrooms.
What type of sauce should I use for this meal?
The best sauce to use is your favorite! This recipe is designed to be flexible, so whether it’s a gourmet brand or a budget-friendly generic option, as long as you enjoy the taste, it’s the right choice. A classic marinara, a rich meat sauce (if you’re not adding ground beef separately), or a chunky vegetable sauce would all be delicious. The key is to pick a sauce that you know your family will love, ensuring maximum enjoyment of your Instant Pot Spaghetti.
Can I add different seasonings or vegetables to this dish?
Absolutely! Personalizing your Instant Pot Spaghetti with additional seasonings or fresh vegetables is highly encouraged. To enhance the flavor, consider adding a pinch of dried oregano, basil, or a bay leaf during the cooking process. For a subtle kick, sprinkle in some red chili pepper flakes – add as much or as little as you desire for your preferred level of spice. You can also sauté chopped onions, bell peppers, or mushrooms with the ground beef for added nutrients and texture. Just be sure to dice them finely so they cook evenly with the pasta.
What to Serve with Your Delightful Instant Pot Spaghetti
While Instant Pot Spaghetti is a complete meal on its own, pairing it with some simple sides can elevate your dining experience and make it even more satisfying.
-
Garlic Bread: You simply can’t go wrong with classic garlic bread. Its crisp texture and savory garlic-butter flavor are the perfect complement to a rich spaghetti sauce. You can grab Texas Toast garlic bread from your local grocery store, or easily prepare your own at home by spreading butter and minced garlic on sliced Italian or French bread, then toasting it until golden brown.
-
Garlic Knots: Another fantastic option that provides both flavor and a delightful chewy texture. Garlic knots are irresistible and ideal for soaking up any remaining delicious sauce on your plate. Many bakeries and grocery stores offer fresh or frozen garlic knots that are quick to heat up.
-
Side Salad: To add a refreshing contrast and a boost of greens, a simple side salad is always a great idea. You can purchase a bagged salad mix for ultimate convenience, or create your own by combining crisp romaine and iceberg lettuce with shredded carrots, juicy cherry tomatoes, a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, and crunchy croutons. Toss with your favorite vinaigrette for a balanced meal.
Storing & Reheating Leftovers
One of the many benefits of Instant Pot Spaghetti is that it makes excellent leftovers! This recipe is perfect for meal prepping or simply enjoying throughout the week.
Can I freeze it?
Yes, absolutely! Instant Pot Spaghetti freezes beautifully. Allow the spaghetti to cool completely, then transfer it to airtight freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave until heated through. You might want to add a splash of water or broth when reheating to loosen the sauce if it has thickened considerably.
For immediate consumption, place any remaining spaghetti in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to three days. It reheats wonderfully in the microwave or on the stovetop over medium-low heat. This means less food waste and more delicious, ready-to-eat meals at your fingertips!

Instant Pot Spaghetti
Ingredients
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 8 minutes (not including pressure build up and release)
Total Time: 30 minutes
Serving Size: 4
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 – 24 ounce cans of pasta sauce (spaghetti sauces Or use my homemade recipe linked above)
- 1 – 14.5 ounce can of diced or crushed tomatoes (or tomato sauce)
- 2 cups of water
- 16 ounces of spaghetti noodles (1 lb)
- Optional Garnish: parmesan cheese
Instructions
-
Pour spaghetti sauce, crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and sugar into a large bowl and combine thoroughly. Set this mixture aside.
-
Add the olive oil to your Instant Pot and select the “Sauté” function. Break up the ground beef and add it to the hot oil. As the beef browns, use a hard spatula or wooden spoon to stir and break up any large chunks until the meat is completely cooked through and no pink remains. Once cooked, turn off the “Sauté” function.
-
Carefully drain any excess fat from the pot, leaving behind the browned ground beef.
-
It’s crucial to scrape the bottom of the Instant Pot well with your wooden spoon. Ensure there are no browned bits stuck to the bottom, as these can cause a “Burn” notice during pressure cooking.
-
Pour the 2 cups of water over the cooked ground beef in the Instant Pot.
-
Break handfuls of the spaghetti noodles in half. Arrange them on top of the water in a criss-cross pattern, spreading them out to prevent them from clumping together. This ensures even cooking.
-
Carefully spoon the prepared spaghetti sauce mixture over the noodles until they are completely covered. We want liquid and sauce both above and below the spaghetti. Gently press the spaghetti down a little under the sauce if any noodles are still uncovered.
-
Do not stir the contents of the pot after layering! It is important for the sugar in the sauce to remain on top and not at the very bottom, as stirring can cause it to crystallize and burn during pressure cooking.
-
Seal the pressure cooker lid and set the cooking time for 8 minutes on HIGH pressure.
-
Once the cooking time is complete, perform a quick release of the pressure by carefully turning the venting knob to the “Venting” position. Stand clear of the steam.
-
When the pressure has fully released and the float valve drops, open the lid. Give the spaghetti a thorough stir to mix all the ingredients, ensuring the sauce is evenly distributed and the pasta is separated. Leave the lid off and let it sit for a few minutes before serving; this allows the sauce to thicken to a perfect consistency.
-
Top individual servings with grated Parmesan cheese or other desired garnishes.
-
ENJOY your quick and delicious Instant Pot Spaghetti!
