The Convenient Base: Starting with Frozen Lasagna
One of the best aspects of this incredible recipe is its ingenious shortcut: using a frozen lasagna as the foundation. This drastically cuts down on preparation time, allowing you to achieve gourmet results with minimal effort. You have the freedom to choose any brand you prefer; whether it’s a hearty meat lasagna, a vibrant vegetarian option, or a classic cheese variety, the deep-frying process will transform it into something truly spectacular. For this particular recipe, a popular choice like Kirkland brand frozen lasagna works wonderfully, providing a consistent and flavorful base ready for its crispy makeover. This method means you can enjoy this decadent dish even on busy weeknights, without compromising on taste or satisfaction.
Transforming Texture: The Irresistible Crispness
The magic of deep frying transforms the soft, tender lasagna into a delightful textural contrast. Each piece, when dipped into the golden oil, develops an incredibly satisfying crunch on the outside, while the interior remains wonderfully soft, cheesy, and piping hot. This unique preparation method creates a truly indulgent bite every single time. Imagine the sensation as you bite through that crispy exterior, revealing the molten cheese and rich sauce within – it’s pure culinary bliss. This is why you’ll find yourself eager to dip one piece after another!
Embracing the Homemade Touch (with a Freezing Prep)
While the convenience of a frozen lasagna is undeniable, those who love to cook from scratch can absolutely adapt this recipe. If you prefer to prepare your lasagna entirely from the ground up, the process is straightforward: simply bake your homemade lasagna as usual, then allow it to cool completely before freezing it solid. Once your homemade lasagna is thoroughly frozen, you can proceed with this recipe just as you would with a store-bought frozen block. This allows for complete control over ingredients and flavors, ensuring your deep-fried masterpiece is exactly to your liking. The freezing step is critical as it provides the structural integrity needed for cutting and coating before frying.
A Shortcut to Scrumptious: Unlocking Unforgettable Flavor
This recipe isn’t just a fun novelty; it’s a genuine shortcut to a truly scrumptious meal that redefines comfort food. The combination of the hot, bubbling interior and the extra-crispy exterior creates a textural symphony that will delight your senses. It’s an unexpectedly brilliant way to enjoy lasagna, adding a level of richness and satisfaction that sets it apart from its baked counterpart. The ease of preparation, coupled with the sensational flavor, means you’ll be reaching for this recipe again and again, whether for a quick family dinner or an impressive dish for guests.

Serving Deep Fried Lasagna: Main Course or Appetizer?
The versatility of Deep Fried Lasagna is one of its greatest strengths. You can simply fry it until it reaches a beautiful golden brown, then crown each piece with a generous sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese, and dig right in for a satisfying main course. Alternatively, for a truly crowd-pleasing appetizer, consider cutting your partially thawed lasagna into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Fry these delightful morsels until golden, and serve them alongside a warm bowl of marinara dipping sauce. These crispy, cheesy bites are perfect for parties, game nights, or as a decadent starter that will impress any guest.
Storage & Reheating for Lasting Enjoyment
Storage:
Should you find yourself with any delightful leftovers (a rare occurrence with this recipe!), store your deep-fried lasagna pieces in an airtight container. Keep them refrigerated, and they will remain fresh and delicious for approximately 3-4 days. Proper storage ensures you can enjoy the deliciousness of this dish for a few days after preparation.

Reheating:
To bring your deep-fried lasagna back to its crispy glory, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the pieces on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until thoroughly heated through and the exterior has regained its delightful crispness. This method ensures the lasagna heats evenly without becoming soggy, preserving that wonderful texture contrast.
Expert Tips for Deep Fried Lasagna Perfection
- Oil Depth is Key: Ensure your cooking oil is at least 6 inches deep in your pot. This allows the lasagna pieces to be fully submerged and fry evenly, resulting in a consistent golden-brown crust.
- Season Your Breadcrumbs: If you’re using plain breadcrumbs, elevate their flavor by adding a teaspoon of Italian seasoning. You can also experiment with garlic powder, onion powder, or a pinch of red pepper flakes for extra zest.
- Mind the Oil Temperature: Maintaining the correct oil temperature (350°F / 175°C) is crucial. If the oil is too cold, the lasagna will absorb too much oil, leading to a greasy result. If it’s too hot, the exterior will burn before the interior has a chance to heat through. A candy thermometer is your best friend here!
- Cutting Frozen Lasagna: Slicing a fully frozen lasagna can be quite challenging and even risky. We strongly recommend allowing it to thaw partially – usually 30 minutes to an hour at room temperature – before attempting to cut it into individual pieces. This makes slicing much easier and safer.
- Breading Timing: Breading the lasagna becomes significantly more difficult as it thaws further. For best results, after partially thawing and cutting into pieces, bread them while they are still mostly frozen. You can then deep fry them immediately or store them briefly in the freezer until ready to cook.
- Quickest Overall Method: For the most efficient process, bread and fry the partially frozen lasagna pieces until they are golden brown. Because larger pieces won’t cook all the way through during frying, transfer them to a baking sheet and pop them into a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 15 minutes. This ensures a final cook-through while maintaining that perfect crispy exterior.

Ingredients
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 5-7 minutes per batch
Serves: 6 (dinner size portions)
- 1 frozen lasagna
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 cups Italian herb breadcrumbs
- 1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese, plus more for garnish
- 6-8 cups vegetable oil or vegetable shortening for frying
- Fresh parsley, finely chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Remove lasagna from packaging and set out to thaw for 30 minutes-1 hour before preparing.
- The lasagna does not need to thaw completely (see tips) but it does need to thaw a bit so that a knife can cut through it.
- Cut lasagna into 6 or more equal pieces and set aside. Smaller pieces will cook more quickly and are great for appetizers. We cut dinner size portions – each frozen lasagna will make about 6 large portions.
- Begin heating the cooking oil in a heavy stock pot or Dutch oven.
- Heat the oil to 350°F (this typically takes about 15 minutes.)
- Clip a candy thermometer onto the side of the pan so that you can maintain an even cooking temperature.
- While the oil is heating, prepare a dredging station. Combine the flour, salt, and pepper in a shallow bowl.
- Whisk together the milk and eggs in a second shallow bowl.
- Combine breadcrumbs and the grated cheese in a third bowl.
- Working with one piece of lasagna at a time, dip the lasagna square into the flour mixture, coating thoroughly on each side.
- Move the piece into the milk/egg mixture and dip on each side, ensuring that all surfaces are wet.
- Finally, place the lasagna into the breadcrumbs, again coating on each side until fully covered.
- Set the battered lasagna pieces on a sheet pan.
- When the oil is heated, add the lasagna, one or two at a time (do not overcrowd the pot) and fry until deep golden brown on all sides.
- Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and set them on paper towels or brown paper bags to soak up the excess oil.
IMPORTANT: When cooking larger pieces of lasagna, they will not heat all the way through in the short time they are in the fry oil.
- If the internal temperature of the lasagna does not reach 165°F (74°C) in the oil, simply place the fried pieces on a sheet pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 minutes.
- The breading will stay crisp and delicious, and this step will finish cooking the lasagna all the way through, ensuring it’s safe and perfectly tender inside.
Smaller pieces of lasagna (bite-size or up to 2” squares) will typically cook through during the time in the frying oil.
- Serve lasagna hot with freshly grated parmesan cheese, marinara dipping sauce, and/or a sprinkle of fresh parsley.
- ENJOY your crispy, cheesy, deep-fried delight!
