Why American Chop Suey? A Deep Dive into a Beloved Classic

American Chop Suey, despite its name, is a distinctly American dish, a heartwarming blend of Italian-American and New England culinary traditions. Unlike its Asian namesake, this version doesn’t involve stir-frying or soy sauce. Instead, it’s a robust, hearty concoction featuring ground beef (or turkey), macaroni, and a rich tomato-based sauce, often studded with onions and bell peppers. It’s the kind of meal that instantly transports you back to simpler times, to family gatherings, and to the comforting aroma of a home-cooked dinner simmering on the stove.

What makes Nana’s recipe stand out? It’s the perfect balance of flavors, a secret touch of sweetness, and a meticulous combination of seasonings that elevate it beyond the ordinary. This isn’t just another meat-and-pasta dish; it’s a symphony of textures and tastes, where the savory meat, al dente macaroni, and vibrant sauce meld into an unforgettable experience. It’s ultimate comfort food redefined, providing both satisfaction and a feeling of contentment that only truly great home cooking can deliver.

Customizing Your American Chop Suey: A Feast for the Eyes and Palate

While the classic recipe often calls for green bell peppers, there’s no reason not to let your culinary creativity shine! For a dish that’s as visually appealing as it is delicious, consider incorporating a mix of red, yellow, and green bell peppers. Each color not only adds a pop of vibrant hue but also a slightly different nuanced sweetness and crunch. I often stick to green peppers for that traditional flavor profile, but trust me, a medley of colors makes this dish even more inviting, especially for those picky eaters at the table!

Beyond peppers, this recipe is incredibly forgiving and adaptable. You can experiment with different types of ground meat – lean ground beef, ground turkey, or even a blend for varied textures and flavors. Want a bit more spice? A pinch of red pepper flakes can kick things up a notch. A sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the top before serving adds a wonderful salty, umami finish that complements the tomato sauce beautifully. Don’t be afraid to make this recipe your own!

Nana’s American Chop Suey! Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef or turkey
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 large green bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 large red bell pepper, diced (optional, for color)
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Adobo Seasoning
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 tablespoon seasoned salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked

Instructions

  1. In a large pan or skillet, sauté your ground meat over medium-high heat until it is about halfway cooked. Remove the meat from the heat and drain any excess fat.
  2. Return the pan to medium heat. Add the minced garlic, diced onions, diced bell peppers, and olive oil to the pan. Continue cooking with the ground meat until the meat is fully browned and the peppers and onions have softened.
  3. Stir in the water, beef broth, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, seasoned salt, black pepper, and sugar, and Adobo seasoning. Mix all ingredients thoroughly to combine.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and allow the mixture to cook for approximately 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
  5. Add the uncooked elbow macaroni directly into the skillet with the sauce. Stir everything well to ensure the macaroni is fully coated and submerged in the liquid.
  6. Cover the pan once again and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the macaroni is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid. Stir periodically to prevent the macaroni from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  7. Once the dish is cooked and the macaroni is al dente, carefully remove and discard the bay leaves.
  8. (Optional) Serve hot, topped with your favorite shredded cheese for an extra layer of deliciousness.
  9. ENJOY your incredible Nana’s American Chop Suey!
